Eisenstadt may be Austria’s smallest provincial capital, but its employment market is unusually strong for a city of its size: with around 20,000 jobs and roughly 16,200 residents, the city actually offers more workplaces than it has inhabitants. As the political and administrative center of Burgenland, it is also an important location for retail, services, public institutions, and regional businesses. Beyond work, the historic center, Esterházy Palace, and the city’s close association with Joseph Haydn give Eisenstadt a distinctive cultural identity, while its position in northern Burgenland keeps Vienna and the wider eastern Austrian economic region within easy reach.
Burgenland lies along Austria's eastern border, with Eisenstadt as its capital and a regional structure shaped by smaller towns, rural communities, and close links to neighboring Hungary, Slovakia, and Slovenia. This cross-border position gives the state a distinctive role between Austria and Central and Eastern Europe, while its economy is supported by a strong base of small and medium-sized businesses alongside manufacturing, logistics, technology, tourism, and services.
