Rolling hills, meadows, forests, and traditional farms give Hitzendorf a distinctly rural Styrian character, even though Graz is only around 13 kilometers away. Local inns, Buschenschänken, outdoor activities, and a strong agricultural food culture make the municipality popular for day trips and everyday recreation. Around 150 businesses provide employment within the area, with local companies covering skilled trades, services, agriculture, gastronomy, retail, and other sectors. At the same time, many residents commute to Graz, which significantly expands the range of available jobs. This combination of regional businesses, high-quality local products, green surroundings, and access to the Styrian capital gives Hitzendorf a practical balance between countryside and metropolitan employment.
Alongside this geographic variety, Styria has a strong industrial and research-oriented economy. Automotive, engineering, manufacturing, technology, and related sectors are particularly important, while the region's location in southern Austria creates close links with neighboring Slovenia and the wider Central European market.
