Mariazell is one of Austria’s best-known pilgrimage towns and a major spiritual and tourism center in Upper Styria. The famous basilica, long pilgrimage tradition, local gingerbread culture, and surrounding Alpine landscape attract visitors throughout the year, supporting hospitality, gastronomy, retail, and local services. Beyond religious tourism, hiking, winter sports, and attractions around the Bürgeralpe add further activity to the regional economy, while the steady flow of visitors keeps demand strong for practical services, maintenance, and skilled trades.
Alongside this geographic variety, Styria has a strong industrial and research-oriented economy. Automotive, engineering, manufacturing, technology, and related sectors are particularly important, while the region's location in southern Austria creates close links with neighboring Slovenia and the wider Central European market.
