Mining shaped Fohnsdorf for generations, and traces of this industrial past remain an important part of the municipality’s identity. Since the mine closed, however, the local economy has become much more diverse, combining industry, skilled businesses, retail, services, and tourism. The Arena am Waldfeld has strengthened Fohnsdorf’s role as a shopping and service center, while the thermal spa and the nearby Red Bull Ring have added new reasons to visit the wider Aichfeld region. Together with the sunny hillside location and local recreation options, this creates a town with a character very different from its former mining days. Employment opportunities now extend across commerce, industry, hospitality, services, and the wider Murtal economy.
Alongside this geographic variety, Styria has a strong industrial and research-oriented economy. Automotive, engineering, manufacturing, technology, and related sectors are particularly important, while the region's location in southern Austria creates close links with neighboring Slovenia and the wider Central European market.
