A historic center, cultural events, markets, and the surrounding Mühlviertel landscape give Freistadt a strong regional identity. The town offers plenty to do beyond working hours, from festivals and cultural programs to outdoor recreation in the surrounding countryside. Economically, Freistadt is much more than an administrative center: around 800 businesses provide approximately 6,000 jobs, making the city an important workplace for the wider region. Retail, services, skilled trades, public institutions, tourism, and other local companies create a broad employment base. Ongoing cooperation between the city, tourism organizations, and the business community also focuses on keeping the center active and strengthening Freistadt as both a commercial and visitor destination.
At the same time, Upper Austria is one of the country's leading industrial and export hubs, with manufacturing, automotive, metalworking, engineering, timber, IT, and services playing an important role. Its central location also provides strong connections to the rest of Austria, Germany, and the Czech Republic.
