About the Job
Natural stone installers fit and finish stone surfaces and elements made from materials such as marble, granite, limestone, or slate. They may work on floors, walls, stairs, façades, countertops, and other architectural features, preparing both the stone and the installation surface before fitting each piece. The job requires accurate measuring and cutting as well as the correct use of adhesives, mortars, joints, and finishing treatments suited to the type of stone.
Natural Stone Installer responsibilities:
- Measure installation areas and plan the layout of stone pieces or slabs
- Inspect and prepare substrates before installation
- Cut, shape, drill, and adjust natural stone to the required dimensions
- Install stone using suitable mortars, adhesives, anchors, or fixing systems
- Level and align stone elements while maintaining consistent joints and transitions
- Fit stone around corners, openings, stairs, edges, and other architectural details
- Fill joints and complete sealing, polishing, or surface treatment where required
- Repair or replace damaged stone elements
- Use stone-cutting, grinding, polishing, and measuring equipment safely
Natural Stone Installer requirements and skills:
- Practical experience with natural stone, tiling, masonry, or a related construction trade is an advantage
- Knowledge of common natural stones and their different handling and installation requirements
- Ability to measure, cut, shape, and fit stone accurately
- Understanding of suitable adhesives, mortars, fixing systems, and joint materials
- Experience preparing and levelling substrates for stone installation
- Safe use of wet saws, grinders, polishing equipment, and other stoneworking tools
- Knowledge of sealing, polishing, and surface protection methods
- Physical ability to handle heavy stone pieces and work in different installation positions
