Kapfenberg combines a strong industrial identity with a surprisingly broad leisure and cultural offer. Burg Oberkapfenberg, regular events, sports facilities, and plenty of options for hiking and cycling give the city more variety than its industrial reputation might suggest. Economically, Kapfenberg is one of Upper Styria’s key centers, with high-tech manufacturing, engineering, research, and education playing a major role. The local economy includes internationally active companies as well as smaller businesses and retail, while FH JOANNEUM in Kapfenberg and the nearby Montanuniversität Leoben strengthen the region’s technical and research profile.
Alongside this geographic variety, Styria has a strong industrial and research-oriented economy. Automotive, engineering, manufacturing, technology, and related sectors are particularly important, while the region's location in southern Austria creates close links with neighboring Slovenia and the wider Central European market.
