Thermal water and Alpine sports have made Bad Hofgastein an internationally recognized destination, but they also shape much of the local economy. Skiing, hiking, wellness facilities, and the mountain landscape attract visitors throughout the year and support a large network of accommodation, restaurants, shops, and leisure businesses. Tourism is complemented by skilled trades, local services, healthcare and wellness-related employment, and agriculture. Because many businesses depend on the surrounding visitor economy, employment opportunities extend beyond hotels and restaurants alone. The wider Gastein Valley adds further workplaces in tourism, transport, construction, and services, creating a job market closely connected to the region’s year-round appeal.
The regional economy is diverse, with tourism and services playing a major role alongside manufacturing, trade, construction, logistics, and technology. Salzburg city is the main business and educational hub, while employment and economic activity are also spread across regional centers such as Hallein, Bischofshofen, and Zell am See.
