About the Job
Roofers install, repair, and maintain roofing systems on residential, commercial, and other buildings. Their work includes preparing roof surfaces, fitting roofing materials, sealing vulnerable areas, and making sure the finished roof protects the structure from weather and moisture. Depending on the project, roofers may work with tiles, shingles, sheet metal, membranes, insulation, or other roofing materials.
Roofer responsibilities:
- Inspect roof surfaces and identify damaged or worn areas
- Prepare roof structures and surfaces before installation
- Install roof tiles, shingles, membranes, sheet metal, insulation, and related materials
- Cut and fit roofing materials around edges, chimneys, vents, and other roof details
- Seal joints, penetrations, and flashing to prevent water entry
- Repair leaks and replace damaged roofing components
- Install or repair gutters, flashing, and other roof drainage elements where required
- Use roofing tools, ladders, scaffolding, and safety equipment correctly
- Follow site safety procedures when working at height
Roofer requirements and skills:
- Practical experience in roofing, construction, or a related trade
- Knowledge of common roofing materials and installation methods
- Understanding of waterproofing, flashing, and moisture protection
- Ability to measure, cut, and fit roofing materials accurately
- Safe use of hand tools, power tools, and roofing equipment
- Ability to identify leaks, damaged sections, and common roof defects
- Physical fitness and confidence working at height and outdoors
- Familiarity with fall-protection and site-safety requirements
