About the Job
Plumbers install, maintain, and repair water supply, drainage, heating, and sanitary systems in residential, commercial, and construction environments. Their work may include fitting pipes and fixtures, connecting appliances, replacing damaged components, and troubleshooting leaks or blockages. Depending on the position, plumbers may work on new installations, renovations, maintenance, or emergency repairs.
Plumber responsibilities:
- Install and connect pipes, fittings, valves, taps, sanitary fixtures, and related equipment
- Read installation plans, technical drawings, and measurements
- Cut, bend, join, and fit pipes using suitable tools and connection methods
- Install or replace sinks, toilets, showers, radiators, and other plumbing fixtures
- Inspect systems for leaks, blockages, pressure problems, or damaged components
- Carry out repairs and replace defective pipes, fittings, valves, and seals
- Test completed installations and check that water, drainage, and heating systems function correctly
- Work with other trades during construction, renovation, or installation projects
- Follow safety requirements and applicable plumbing and building standards
Plumber requirements and skills:
- Relevant training or practical experience in plumbing, sanitary installation, heating systems, or a related trade
- Good knowledge of common pipe materials, fittings, valves, and installation methods
- Ability to read plumbing plans and technical documentation
- Experience using pipe cutters, threading tools, pressing equipment, wrenches, and other plumbing tools
- Knowledge of water supply, drainage, and sanitary systems
- Ability to identify leaks, blockages, and common installation faults
- Understanding of sealing, pressure testing, and safe system isolation
- Relevant trade qualifications or additional certifications may be required for certain positions
