Bad Ischl is one of the best-known spa towns in the Salzkammergut and has long combined tourism with a strong local business base. Its economy is supported not only by hotels, gastronomy, wellness, and leisure, but also by retail, skilled trades, transport, consulting, and a large number of small and medium-sized businesses. With more than 1,300 registered businesses and a strong regional role within the inner Salzkammergut, Bad Ischl offers a broader employment market than its resort-town image might suggest. The imperial heritage, historic center, and surrounding lakes and mountains add a distinctive quality of life to the city.
At the same time, Upper Austria is one of the country's leading industrial and export hubs, with manufacturing, automotive, metalworking, engineering, timber, IT, and services playing an important role. Its central location also provides strong connections to the rest of Austria, Germany, and the Czech Republic.
