About the Job
Handymen carry out a wide range of small repairs, maintenance tasks, and practical improvements in homes, commercial properties, and workspaces. The role often combines basic carpentry, mounting, patching, fitting, and general repair work, with tasks changing from one property or project to another. Handymen are usually expected to assess minor problems, choose suitable tools and materials, and complete straightforward repairs without the need for a specialist trade.
Handyman responsibilities:
- Carry out minor repairs and general maintenance around buildings and properties
- Assemble and install shelves, furniture, fittings, fixtures, and other interior elements
- Repair doors, handles, hinges, locks, cabinets, and similar components
- Patch small holes, cracks, and damaged wall or surface areas
- Measure, cut, drill, fasten, and fit materials for basic repair and installation work
- Replace worn or damaged fittings and hardware
- Perform minor maintenance around kitchens, bathrooms, storage areas, and common spaces
- Identify problems that require a specialist and report them before further work is carried out
- Keep tools, materials, and work areas organized during and after each task
Handyman requirements and skills:
- Practical experience with property maintenance, repairs, installation work, or a related field is an advantage
- Ability to use common hand and power tools safely
- Basic knowledge of carpentry, mounting, fastening, patching, and general repair methods
- Ability to take accurate measurements and select suitable fixings and materials
- Understanding of common building components, fittings, and hardware
- Ability to identify the cause of minor maintenance problems and choose an appropriate repair
- Comfortable working independently across a variety of practical tasks
- Awareness of when electrical, gas, plumbing, or other regulated work must be handled by a qualified specialist
